Practicing with darkroom printing, you realise very soon that often you cannot only decide between a high or low grade, but, in some ways, you need both. High grades affect the darks and you can get deep black contrasts, while low or 0 grades allow to get the details in the whites, but the overall print may look flat and grayish. Split grading is a great technique possible on multigrade paper and allows you to get both deep blacks and detailed whites, for this reason I did further (more technical) researches.
In particular, I have found this manual written by Chris Woodhouse extremely clear and helpful.
