I am looking at different book designs that I may use as a reference for mine. The layout of my book will be particularly crucial to create a visual narrative through the pictures and the text, which plays a very important role in this series.
One of the books that has really inspired me is "Foreigneir" by John Radcliffe Studio. This series is about the places where migrants who cross the Mediterranean Sea arrive. The style is rather photojournalistic than documentary, in fact there are many datas and facts and less importance is given to the personal stories of the people. One characteristic I really like about the book is the effective use of both colour and monochrome pictures which combine really well and I am considering to imitate this style.
Another book I looked at is "Humans of New York". I decided to look at the design of this book because is a condensation of portraits and stories and I may take a similar approach in mine.
I think the design of my book will be more similar to Foreigner, and I would like to dedicate more space to each subject and their stories.
On Monday we went to Derby Photo Festival and there were a couple of exhibitions that inspired me a lot for my project. The first one is "Sixteen", a group project of sixteen photographers ideated by Craig Easton. The central idea behind the project is to give a voice to the next generation to speak about their dreams, their ambitions, their hopes and fears for their future. Each portrait is accompanied by an interview with the subject and the whole series creates a portrait of a generation.
The other exhibition that really helped me has been the project that the Italian photographer Mariano Doronzo as shot in Derby as part of a residency commission. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of his series, but he used a very similar approach to mine and he gave very important tips for my project. Thanks to him, I got to know about the Italian community in Nottingham who moved from the village of Accettura from the 50's and has kept their tradition extremely alive. For this reason, I started building contacts with this community and I am now planning to go to Nottingham and add a new chapter to my book.
