When I went to take the videos of Shane (the blacksmith) he told me that few weeks before a Netflix crew interviewed him and took videos in his forge in order to create a inspirational short film. Two days ago the published the draft of this video that exactly follows the sane guidelines we have in our assignment.
This incredible short film showed me the potential that I had. This professional crew had my same material to work with (same subject, same location) and this represents the perfect example teaching me how I can I do better.
This is the video:
They completely eliminated the ambient noise of the forge and they have only used the interview and background music.
The B-roll and the interview set-up is amazing and I really like the slow-down clips.
My problem at the forge has been the terrible noise in the footage that made my interview unusable. Unfortunately I could not come back to arrange a formal interview without the machines working so I had to change my plans and make the video about someone else.
This video is really inspiring for my practice, however I think that they should have included background noise at some points of the video, all the different sounds you hear in a forge, like the hammer hitting the iron, are characteristics that identify blacksmithing and in my opinion would have "broken" the film a little bit making it more engaging.
