On the 24th January, I met Jane, the director of the charity I am gonna collaborate with, and we discussed together about the development of my project.
As I mentioned in my proposal, Young Carers is an organisation that supports young people who have a family member affected by some kind of disabilities and they provide them regular or ongoing care and/or emotional support.Speaking with Jane, our aim is to develop a project about the story of one of the families taking part of their programme and we found one ideal one.
This family lives in the Forest of Dean and they have two children: Emily and Will. Will is an 8-year-old boy affected by Autism, he attended the public school with his sister but after several bullying acts, the family took the decision to educate him at home.
However, my story will be focused on Emily who is the young carer supported by the organisation.
I am waiting for the official permission of the family to proceed with this project.
If I will get the access, the plan is to meet Gemma (Will and Emily’s mum) first and speak with her before meeting the whole family. I will be always in company with Jane and my aim is to establish a trusted relationship with them, in order to document their life with a sincere and intimate approach and not as a stranger sneaked in their lives.
So the story will be focused on Emily and how her life is shaped by the conditions of her brother. I would like to document her hobbies and interests, her goals, the relationship with her family and friends... Because every aspect of her life is conditioned by her responsibility as a young carer.
If I will have the family's permission, this work can potentially turn into a long-term project, far beyond this module.
Jane, who is professionally a journalist, has been already in contact with the press for a possible publication and it can potentially be published on Costwoldlife. This is a local monthly magazine focused on this part of England.
