Since in this new semester I have to learn how to make a project suitable for publication, I have started to look at different tear sheets published on various media both on hard copy magazines/newspapers and online versions.

On magazines such as National Geographic, the pictures have a great importance along the article and they are given a lot of space. All these pictures are in context and the photographer Jonas Bendiksen has included both candid and posed photos. We can clearly see an alternation of pictures with lot of white space and colored, detailed pictures.

1) It shows the action, what the article is roughly about

2) It is shot indoor and it represents an important part of the story

3) Another action taken outdoor but more specific about a part of the story

4) A posed portrait

5) An interaction between several people, shot indoor and, in the same page, a picture of an action but not as interesting as the others, I think it has been included mainly to come along the text

6) A posed portrait shot indoor with lot of details. A typical documentary photo that provides us with plenty of information to put the story in context

7) Another action taken outdoor but less specific and with lot of empty space. A perfect picture to conclude a story

The same project published on a different magazine.

The article here had less space available so there are less pictures but we can find the same elements.

1) The action, it reveals us the topic

2) Environment

3) Indoor shot

4) Another action relevant to the topic but not a memorable shot and an interaction

5) Staged portrait

In another National Geographic-style article we can clearly see a kind of pattern of pictures and written work. The last picture is split between two pages but keeping the subject on one side we don't loose any detail.

Different style and format magazine, photography by Antonio Faccilongo. In this publication all the pages follow the same layout.
